Tinubu meets with business moguls, governors on plan to bring succour to suffering Nigerians

Abuja, Feb. 26, 2024: President Bola Tinubu has met with high level business people and governors over the current hardship and emphasised his administration’s will to put in place measures to bring succour to Nigerians.

At a tripartite meeting with governors and business people in Abuja on Sunday, Tinubu said that all options would be explored to resolve the nation’s socio-economic challenges.

The President met with Governors Charles Soludo of Anambra and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, Tony Elumelu and Mr Segun Ajayi-Kadir, Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.

At the meeting, Tinubu said that government was ready to rub mind with all stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the current situation in the country.

”Let’s look at what we’re doing right and what we’re doing wrong to bring life back to the economy. Like I said, many times, the people of this country are only the people who we have to please.

”We are very much concerned from students to mothers and fathers, farmers, the traders and realising that everyone of us will have to fetch water from the same well. ⁣

”We’re looking for additional efforts that might help the downtrodden Nigerians and we will provide that hope and reassurance that economic recovery is on its way. ⁣

”We are not saying that we have all the answers. But we will not be blamed for not trying.

”We assure Nigerians that we will do our best to get our marshal plans in place and fashion out the best economic future for this country,” he said.

Soludo also said that the meeting allowed for cross fertilisation of ideas on the state of the economy and the way forward, adding that every Nigerian need to contribute to its growth.

”We have all the potentials and we have all that it takes to make Nigeria ride through these turbulent times and put the economy back on a sustainable growth.

”I think there is unity of purpose, determination, the sense of patriotism and determination by all to make it happen and by the special grace of God, it’s now the execution, execution,” he said.

The governor of Ogun said that all governors have resolved to join hands with the President to provide the necessary intervention to cushion the effect of the administration’s reforms.

Dapo assured Nigerians that government at all tiers would not leave them alone in this trying period, adding that better times are in the offering shortly.

”In my state and in other states, we are bringing in rice, we’re bringing food items and we’re selling at rates that can be obtained before the downslide of the Naira.”

Dangote, after the meeting, also disclosed that the committee deliberated on issues concerning the economy, food security, security and job creation.

He expressed the confidence that Nigeria and Nigerians have the potential to be great once again, adding that the nation is on the path of transformation.

Rabiu, who is the Chairman of the BUA Group, said that the meeting dwelt on issues about the foreign exchange rate and how to bring it down.

”We discussed on how to bring the foreign exchange rate down because we all know that what is happening as regards the foreign exchange is artificial, it is manipulative and thank God the CBN is doing quite a lot.”

Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, said that the various discussions and solutions would reshape the country, alleviate poverty, create employment and put food on the tables of Nigerians.

Ajayi-Kadir of the Manufacturing Association of Nigerian, said that the private sector was looking forward to the implementation of the decisions taken at the meeting.

”The issues surrounding foreign exchange, insecurity and general operating environment were discussed and we received the assurances of Mr. President that very soon we are going to start to see some major changes.

”I think in the advisory committee that has been formed, the private sector will play a very significant role, and Nigerians, going forward should be hopeful that we are having solutions to the challenges that we have,” he said.

Abuja, Jan. 0, 2024: President Bola Tinubu has dismissed the heads of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Mr Babatunde Irukera and that of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, Mr Alexander Okoh.

This is contained in a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Monday in Abuja.

The Presidential spokesman said that the dismissal was in conformity with plans to restructure and reposition critical agencies of the Federal Government.

This, he added, was also towards protecting the rights of Nigerian consumers and providing strong basis for enhanced contributions to the nation’s economy by key growth-enabling institutions.

Ngelale said that the two dismissed Chief Executives are directed to hand over to the next most senior officer in their respective agencies, pending the appointment of new ones.

He said that the dismissal of the two heads was with immediate effect.

Tinubu extends 50% transport cost package to Nigerians

Abuja, Dec. 21, 2023: President Bola Tinubu has approved the intervention of Federal Government in reducing  cost of transportation for  Christmas and New Year festivities to 50 per cent on all inter-state routes.

Dr Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals, who disclosed this while briefing State House Correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja, said that logistics for the Federal Government subsidized transport fare had been concluded.

He said  this was part of the President’s resolve to reduce the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians who wished to travel to see their family and friends during the  Yuletide periods.

‘’In the spirit of Christmas and the end of year festivities, President Bola Tinubu, in another demonstration of his love for Nigerians, has approved  that the Federal Government should intervene to bring down the cost of public transportation.

‘’This is to allow our compatriots who want to travel to visit their loved ones and hometowns to do so without stress and the extra burden imposed by  the high cost of transport around this period.

‘’The President is well aware of the recent increase in cost of inter-state transportation and even for air travels.

‘’Traditionally, our people love to travel during Christmas and end of year to be with families and friends and this has been the practice for ages.”

He explained that the reduction in  transportation cost would begin from Thursday, until Jan. 4, 2024.

Alake added that the Federal Government would be working through the Ministry of Transportation to reach out to transporters, road transport unions, Nigerian Railway Corporation to seamlessly deliver on this special presidential initiative.

‘’It is in this wise that the Federal Government is announcing, beginning from Thursday, a special discounted holiday season fare on road transport and zero-fare by rail across Nigeria.

‘’What this means is that from Thursday, Nigerians willing to travel can board public transport via minibuses, luxury buses at 50% discount of current cost and all our train services on the routes the trains currently serve at zero cost to and fro on their travels this holiday season.’’

Alake said that this reduction would affect routes like Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Ibadan, Akure, Maiduguri, Sokoto and other major inter-state transportation hubs.

He also said that Tinubu had directed the Police, Department of State Services, the military and other security agencies to collaborate to ensure safety of lives and property during the festive period.

‘’The Federal Government under the leadership of President Tinubu is working very hard to make sure Nigerians have a memorable and happy holiday season.

‘’The President has already directed the police, department of state services, the military and other security agencies to work collaboratively to ensure the holiday period is safe without any security breach in any part of the country.’’

Mr Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, also explained that the measure was not a one-off thing by the Federal Government.

‘’This is part of efforts President Bola Tinubu intends to be doing.

‘’It is not a one-off thing, and even though it is targeted at Christmas, the President would continue to review situations especially national holidays like this and see what kind of intervention can come going forward,’’ he said.

Alhaji Saidu Alkali, Minister of Transportation, disclosed that the Federal Government had already met with the leadership of the transport companies toward a successful and efficient reduction cost.

He said the ministry would maintain all the train routes in order to ensure that Nigerians enjoyed the maximum benefits of these special presidential intervention.

Berlin (Germany), Nov. 21, 2023: President Bola Tinubu, on Monday in Berlin, Germany, told investors that beyond Nigeria’s natural resources, the people of Nigeria, who are highly educated, highly skilled, and naturally industrious.

These qualities, he said were the primary asset and advantage the country wields over other nations in the global race for new investments.

The President spoke at a panel discussion titled, “Fostering local value chains and investments in Africa – The role of the German private sector” at the G20 Compact with Africa Economic Conference, hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The President noted that while promoting the rule of law is crucial for attracting foreign investments, Nigeria’s energetic youth population and well-educated populace represent the greatest incentive provided to investors toward the mutually-beneficial replication of China’s economic resurgence.

“We are dogged in our pursuit of natural gas development today, in tandem with hydrogen production for tomorrow. The world knows Nigeria as a leader in the energy sector.

“Our vast gas deposits and business-friendly environment make us an attractive investment destination. But we are going a step further now. We are creating fiscal responsibility and tax reforms as we reform our financial institutions to expeditiously accommodate foreign investments.

”We are eager and ready to partner with you. We have the youngest, largest, and most vibrant youth population in Africa. Equally, we have every ingredient required in the making of a modern economy: a well-educated population, a massive market, and the political will to bring it all together under my leadership.

“Africa has moved beyond the false past notions of business disincentivization and poor adherence to the rule of law. We now fully recognize the nexus between the inflow of investor money and the sanctity of contracts. We want to partner on the basis of who we are and what we do, rather than on the basis of long-held misconception,” the President stated.

President Tinubu apprised the summit of the country’s intentional move toward developing labour-intensive sectors of the Nigerian economy for massive job creation as well as a new emphasis on technological progress and new opportunities in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding information and communications technology space.

The President assured potential investors that Nigeria has moved beyond restrictive policies, and today, capital can be moved in and out of the country freely, providing flexibility for investors.

“Nigeria has consolidated on its democracy with several consecutive handovers of power. There is stability and predictability in the socio-political development of our country, which provides a conducive atmosphere for business operations and investment.

“Your money is safe. Since I assumed office in May 2023, we have embarked on transformative changes, removing all obstacles hindering businesses. We are reforming the economy based on the principle and philosophy of good governance,” the President confidently affirmed.

 While persuading German automobile firms to establish manufacturing plants in Nigeria, he invited German businesses to take advantage of investment opportunities in multiple sectors following the successful visit of the German Chancellor to Nigeria in October.

Speaking earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz noted the dynamic and evolving nature of economic relations between the developed and developing nations of the world as he positions Germany to enhance partnership with Nigeria and Africa on a mutually-beneficial basis.

“To be clear, this is not about traditional development aid with donor-recipient schemes. Instead, we now focus on investments that yield benefits for both parties. In Germany, as we strive for climate neutrality by 2045, we anticipate a substantial demand for green hydrogen, a considerable portion of which we plan to import, including from Africa.

“Many African countries possess larger potentials for renewable energy and competitive hydrogen production than we do. I am convinced that there are fantastic opportunities for expanding cooperation between German and African companies in this context.

“I highlighted this during my visit to Nigeria, where we already operate a hydrogen office and aspire to be a partner in the ambitious expansion of renewable energies,” the Chancellor stated.

Tinubu meets Scholz, negotiates German investment in power, rail

Berlin (Germany), Nov. 21, 2023: President Bola Tinubu at the G20 Compact with Africa Economic Conference on Monday, met with German Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, where he noted that Nigeria’s determined pursuit of German investment in targeted sectors.

He said the Nigerian economy was focused on critical growth-enabling industries in energy, transportation, and electric power production, transmission, and distribution.

Recognizing the success of Siemens AG in positively transforming the quantity and quality of Egyptian electric power supply, the President noted the staggered and unsteady implementation of the Siemens-supported Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).

He noted he would take on new urgency with a more deliberate process of project execution, even as he recognized the need to embrace Siemens technology in all aspects of the project for project sustainability.

“For me, I am very much committed to pursuing all aspects of the Siemens Power project and the skill development opportunities that will emerge from that project for our talented youths who can participate in sustaining the industry,” the President affirmed.

Aware of the new 2,000 kilometres ultra-high speed rail network which Siemens is presently constructing across 60 cities in Egypt at the speed of 230km/hour, the President further expressed his keen interest in the role Siemens can play in modernizing and expanding Nigeria’s rail network.

He said Nigeria need such ultra-modern trains and railways which can more than double the speed of existing 100km/hour standard-gauge systems presently operating in Nigeria.

The German Chancellor expressed readiness but with an acknowledgment of the need to resolve administrative and financial hurdles brought about by governance problems emanating from prior administration in the sector.

“I know that there is a lot of work that has been done. There is already a big production of electricity in Nigeria, but it is not getting to the population.

“Of course, this has to do with the need for a provision of stations and infrastructure on the grid. Siemens has developed the plan and is ready to deepen implementation, but it is now up to your new government to take the follow-up action that you are now committed to taking.

“On the railway plans, Siemens will be very happy to do this when more progress is made on the power project which has been started already,” the German Chancellor said.

President Tinubu drew the attention of the German leader to the need for his business community to focus their attention on value-additive processing in Nigerian solid minerals, agricultural goods, automobile production, and other job-creating sub-sectors of the economy.

“Everything the world requires in terms of business environment reforms are underway in Nigeria. Perhaps our foreign investors are still a bit paranoid that those old Nigerian issues are intractable. But my track record speaks for itself. I have transformed an entity before now. I am here to do it again, and I will,” the President stated.

The German Chancellor nodded in agreement and said, “For China, it came down to a lot of investment from overseas that leveraged on cheap and skilled labour with adequate internal infrastructure and shipping infrastructure for imports and exports to flow easily. These things are possible in Nigeria. You even have abundant natural resources. Step by step, it is achievable, Mr. President.”

The two leaders of the largest economies in Africa and Europe, respectively, agreed to deepen collaboration on the utilization of advanced biometric systems and border control technology to check irregular migration, even as the two leaders agreed that investments in labour-intensive industries will go a long way toward resolving the root causes of the problem.

President Tinubu later exchanged views with the German Head of State and Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, before attending the Compact with Africa Summit of Heads of State and Government.

Uyo, Nov. 15, 2023: President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would reverse the worrisome trend in the economy.

Tinubu gave the assurance on Wednesday in Uyo, in a message to the opening of the All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC).

Represented by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, the President said he was aware of the pains being faced by Nigerians and had taken critical steps to cushion the effects of petrol subsidy removal on the citizenry.

He listed the N35,000 wage award to civil servants, N100 billion CNG powered buses and signing of five executive orders to improve businesses, as some of the steps taken by the administration.

Others, he said, included the efforts to clear billions of dollars in inherited foreign exchange backlog, and the establishment of the committee to reduce tax burden on Nigerians.

”The pains being faced by Nigerians are necessary sacrifices we all have to make, we are all stakeholders in the development of our dear nation,” he added.

Tinubu further said that the administration was not resting, but striving to ensure a thriving and prosperous nation.

He assured that the government would welcome stimulating discussions towards the growth of the economy.

The President tasked the media to ensure truth and objectivity in the reportage of national issues.

The theme for the conference is ‘Stimulating Economic Growth, Technological Advancement: Role of the Media.’

Tinubu negotiates multi-billion dollars IDB infrastructure funding

Riyadh, Nov. 15, 2023: President Bola Tinubu on Monday in Makkah advanced negotiations for a multi-billion dollars infrastructure finance facility from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).

This is contained in a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to President on Media and Publicity, on Tuesday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The facility is to be used to fund a multi-sectoral portfolio of infrastructure projects at the federal and sub-national levels.

This development was the outcome of substantive investment discussions held between the President and Vice-President (Country Programs) of the IDB, Dr Mansur Muhtar.

“Nigeria is the candle of hope that will light the way for Africa. And once Africa is illuminated, the world will be a brighter place for all of humanity. We are determined to create a future for our gifted youths. Investments in Nigeria will be among the world’s most high-yielding. Investor money will flow easily in and out of our country. Processes will be seamless. And your bank has always been a faithful partner in progress.

“We have serious deficits in port infrastructure, power infrastructure, and agro-allied facilities that will enable sustainable food security in our country. These deficits present unrivalled opportunities for savvy investors in a market that is by far the largest on the continent. Yes, we had the vision to enable Lekki Deep Seaport before others saw it. We must be bold again.

“We inherited serious liabilities, but also assets from our predecessors. We do not make any excuses. There are several sectors replete with investment opportunities for smart investors.

”Access to finance and guarantees can be a hindrance in some cases. You can come in there. We see you as a critical enabler.

“You have partnered with us before. We want to scale it up now and do much more with greater ambition and clear vision,” the President stated.

Noting the historic essence of the President’s swift and decisive economic reforms, the Vice-President of the Islamic Development Bank said the financial world has been monitoring events in Nigeria and has concluded that Africa’s largest economy means business this time.

“Mr President, we know you inherited a very tough set of circumstances. It is to your credit that you have taken very bold steps without delay.

“We are ready to work with you. We are ready to support big investments in Nigeria. We agree that if Nigeria succeeds, Africa succeeds. And the world needs Africa to succeed.

“The Islamic Development Bank President announced the provision of 50 billion Dollars of new investment for the African continent from the Arab Coordination Group (ACG). This was announced at the Saudi-Arab-African Economic Summit.

“As the largest market and the largest economy in Africa, Nigeria will certainly receive a significant share. We look forward to supporting Nigeria’s economic transformation,” the IDB Vice-President said.

The president thanked the IDB management while pledging the unwavering commitment of his administration to win investors’ trust and confidence, just as he did in Lagos State many years ago.

Tinubu to attend 5th Arab-African Summit to woo investors

Abuja, Nov. 6, 2023: President Bola Tinubu is to attend the Arab-African and Saudi-Africa summits holding this week in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as part of efforts to seek for foreign investors.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, disclosed this on Sunday while briefing State House Correspondents in Abuja.

He said that the attendance of president was predicated on the administration’s drive to use all avenues to attract Foreign Direct Investment into the various sectors of the economy.

‘’The president will use the summit to attract Foreign Direct Investment into the country. The two summits will surely yield tangible economic benefits for the country and Africa.

He added that the president would be aggressive, like in all other of his engagements, in attracting genuine foreign investors into different sectors of the economy.

The Arab-African Summit is aimed at establishing practical solutions for developing Arab-African cooperation and catching up with the emerging and influential international powers in African.

The summit seeks to identify fields for cooperation, build a common vision for sharing knowledge and experience, and identify projects and frameworks for improving bilateral and multilateral ties between Arab and African countries.

‘’In light of the geostrategic shifts unfolding in the international system, Arab countries are collectively and diligently seeking to diversify their strategic partners.

‘’This effort has created opportunities for establishing promising strategic partnerships in several fields with many actors in the international community,’’ Dr Khalid Manzalawi, Assistant Secretary-General for International Political Affairs of the League of Arab States, said at a meeting in Cairo in October.

Some of the objectives of the Summit include reinvigoration of the Arab-African Relations, addressing issues relating to conflicts and counter-terrorism as well as tackling challenges such as poverty, education, health, food security, developmental matters, debt crises, and global challenges like climate change, migration, and humanitarian aid.

The Summit was last held in 2016.

Ngelale said that detailed briefing would be made in the course of the various meetings by the president with investors, which are relevant to the economic rejuvenation of the country.

He said that the president would be accompanied to the summit by cabinet members, the business community as well as other relevant government functionaries.

Business and Property Court’s judgment on P&ID elates Tinubu

Abuja, Oct. 24, 2023: The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr Mohammad Idris, said on Monday that President Bola Tinubu was elated by UK court’s reversal of $11 billion awarded against Nigeria.

Idris stated this while fielding question from the state house correspondent at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC), held at the presidential villa, Abuja.

” Let me reiterate that Nigeria actually saved $11.6 billion by that singular judgment. You recall that this is not a case that was instituted against this administration.

” It is against the Federal Government of Nigeria over the years. The government of President Bola Tinubu inherited it but dealt with it judiciously and expeditiously. It ensured that all legal mechanisms were put in place to get us to win that case.

” So, it was actually a very delightful moment during the Federal Executive Council meeting when the news filtered in that Nigeria had indeed won this case. And of course, as expected, the President was very elated.

” So also were members of the Finance Council. We’re all very happy that that news filtered in and this is one direction that Mr president is going ensuring that things are dealt with expeditiously, responsibly and with utmost responsibility.”

The Business and Property Court in London presided over by Justice Robin Knowles of the Commercial Courts of England and Wales has quashed the 11 billion dollars awarded against Nigeria in a case filed by the Process and Industrial Developments Company, (P&ID).

Judge Knowles held that the award was obtained by fraud and that what had happened in the case was contrary to public policy.

The court also declared that it did not find any merit in the charges of bribery levelled against a former Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr Olasupo Shasore, SAN, who represented Nigeria in the arbitration.

The case marked: CL-2019-000752, the Federal Government sought to overturn $6.6 billion arbitration awarded in favour of P&ID in 2017.

The award had continued to accrue interest since then, rising to approximately $11 billion before the judgment.

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday extolled the judgment rendered by Judge Robin Knowles of the Business and Property Court in London.

The court awarded a landmark victory to the Federal Government of Nigeria over a firm known as Process and Industry Development (P&ID) L.td.

Tinubu made the commendation in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale.

He said the judgment proved conclusively that nation states would no longer be held hostage by economic conspiracies between private firms and solitarily corrupt officials.

Ngelale said, ” Following Judge Knowles’ dismissal of the $11.5 billion (USD) value of the award plus accumulated interest, previously won by P&ID over a failed 2010 deal to allegedly build a gas processing plant, on the grounds that the award was obtained by fraud.

” President Tinubu commends the UK Court for prioritizing the merits of the case above all other considerations.

” This landmark judgment proves conclusively that nation states will no longer be held hostage by economic conspiracies between private firms and solitarily corrupt officials who conspire to extort and indebt the very nations they swear to defend and protect.”

He said the victory was not for Nigeria alone, adding that it was a victory for the long-exploited continent.

” And for the developing world at large which has for too long being on the receiving end of unjust economic malpractice and overt exploitation.

” Nigeria is appreciative of the tremendous efforts of the defense team and acknowledges the role of the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Office of the Attorney-General in the process of defending Nigeria’s interest in this case,” the president was quoted as stating.

Tinubu grants partial waiver on “no work, no pay’’ order for doctors, ASUU

Abuja, Oct. 21, 2023: President Bola Tinubu has approved the waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” order instituted against striking members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Aug. 1.

The waiver was in accordance with the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy.

This is contained in a statement by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the order was placed on the NARD members following the commencement of their industrial action on July 26.

The NARD called off the strike after several consultations with the Federal Government on Aug. 12.

The federal government has, however, directed the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to withhold all salaries accrued by striking NARD members during the 17 days of their strike action.

“In view of the faithful implementation of terms which were agreed upon during the fruitful deliberations between the Resident Doctors and the Federal Government of Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has directed the grant of an exceptional last waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” Order on Resident Doctors.

“(This) will allow for the members of the NARD to receive the salaries which were previously withheld during the 17-day strike action.”

The president  granted the waiver with a mandatory requirement that the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment must secure a Document of Understanding (DoU).

The president said that the DoU must establish that this exceptional waiver granted by the President would be the last to be granted to the NARD and all other Health Sector Unions.

Similarly, the president approved partial waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” on members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and ordered the release of their four months withheld salaries.

“Invoking the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy, President Bola Tinubu has approved the partial waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” Order that was instituted against striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).”

The order follows the commencement of their eight-month industrial action which began on Feb. 14, 2022 and was terminated on Oct. 17, 2022.

“In view of his determination to mitigate the difficulties being felt during the implementation of key economic reforms in the country, as well as his recognition of the faithful implementation of terms which were agreed upon during the fruitful deliberations between ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“President Bola Tinubu has directed the grant of an exceptional last waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” Order on ASUU, which will allow for the previously striking members of ASUU to receive four (4) months of salary accruals out.”

The amount is to be paid out of the eight months of salary which was withheld during the eight-month industrial action undertaken by the union.

The president also directed the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment to secure a Document of Understanding (DoU) from ASUU.

The DoU is establish that this exceptional waiver granted by the President will be the last to be granted to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and all other Education Sector Unions.
