Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will take over all mining permits managed by the provincial administrations starting from Friday.
“According to Law Number 3 of 2020 about Minerals and Coal, the licensing authority will shift to the central government, namely the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, six months after the law was enacted,’’ the ministry’s Director of Coal Development and Business, Sujatmiko said Thursday.
The ministry has sent letters to provincial governors asking them to hand over all local mining permits.
On June 10, 2020, President Joko Widodo signed the Mineral and Coal Law, which states that the mining business is carried out based on a license approved by the central government.
Meanwhile, according to the law, the central government can delegate the authority to grant business permits to provincial administrations.
On March 10, 2020, there were 3,372 provincial mining business permits and 132 central mining business permits recorded in Indonesia.
