Digitalisation of Insurance Certificate excites Association

The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has welcomed the digitalisation of marine insurance certificate to empower the association to eliminate the activities of insurance fraudsters in the marine sector.
The Chairman of NIA, Mr Tope Smart, commended the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) for approving the digitalisation of the certificate.
The NIA boss said the association adopted the use of technology to also grow the industry’s contributions to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), saying that technology plays a vital role in the growth of any business and economy.
Smart said that some operators in the sector had been presenting fake insurance certificates; to avoid paying insurance premium, thereby ripping off the industry some funds.
“Though, some genuinely paid premium; but were given fake insurance certificates, ‘’ he said.
The NIA boss said the association would also intensify insurance sensitisation programmes in the marine sector just as it did in transportation system.
“Prior to the association’s awareness programmes in the transportation sector, some transporters thought the importance of car insurance was just `Oga police let me pass’, Smart said.
On 2019 expectations, the NIA boss said underwriters were optimistic that the year would be better.
