Women in mining value chain will yield economic benefit — NGO

Women in Mining Nigeria (WIMIN), a Non-Governmental Organisation, says mainstreaming women along all value chains of the solid mineral sector will yield more economic benefits to the country.

The President of WIMIN, Janet Adeyemi, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.

She stated that the involvement of women in the solid mineral sector would also improve their socio-economic well-being.

She added that women in mining would be celebrating the 2022 International Women’s Day on March 8, with the aim of encouraging young girls to embrace Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and other mining-related courses.

She said members would also be appreciated, and admonished relevant stakeholders to join hands with WIMIN to achieve the objectives of the celebration.

According to her, WIMIN is collaborating with the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA), Ford Foundation, Solid Mineral Trust Fund (SMDF) and

Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development for the celebration.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the cultural, political, and socio-economic achievements of women.

It is also a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, violence and abuse against women around the globe.
