Nigeria’s executive order on pharmaceutical, a reflection of Tinubu’s visionary leadership

The Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF) has applauded the decision taken by President Bola Tinubu to issue an executive order aimed at enhancing local production of pharmaceutical products, describing it as a reflection of his visionary leadership.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Ahmad Sajoh and Secretary Afolabi Josiah, the group noted that it was a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards self-reliance in the pharmaceutical sector.

It said: ” Like many Nigerians, we are enthused by the new Executive Order of President Tinubu which seeks to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported drugs, foster innovation, and create job opportunities within the pharmaceutical industry.

“it was no surprise that stakeholders, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), have praised this decisive action, recognizing its potential to transform the healthcare landscape in Nigeria.

“We fully support this progressive initiative and urge the relevant government agencies to expedite its implementation. Our commendation is based on several key points.

“By boosting local pharmaceutical production, Nigeria can significantly reduce its reliance on imported medicines, ensuring a more secure and sustainable supply of essential drugs.

“This will improve accessibility and affordability for all Nigerians. The Executive Order is poised to catalyze the growth of the local pharmaceutical industry, creating numerous jobs and fostering economic development.

“For us, this will boost local production and also enhance Nigeria’s export potential in the pharmaceutical sector. Encouraging local production will drive innovation within the pharmaceutical industry, leading to the development of new and improved medications, the group said.

The TSF further asserted that “This process will check the illegal importation of fake and adulterated drugs which some unpatriotic elements engage in for criminal profiteering.’
The group then called on the business community to take advantage of this commendable move by the president to key into this laudable project adding that no country develops without the combined efforts of both the government and the private sector.

The TSF further asserts that this initiative will also ensure higher standards of quality and safety for pharmaceutical products and that the enhancement of local production possibilities will strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies, such as pandemics and disease outbreaks. This will ensure a steady supply of necessary medications.”

The TSF said it will look forward to relevant government agencies, viz: the Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, and other relevant regulatory bodies to prioritize and accelerate the implementation of this executive order.
