Huawei commits to complement Nigeria’s effort in ICT development

Huawei, a global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) provider, has expressed commitment to complementing government’s efforts in creating job opportunities for Nigerians.

Huawei Media Manager, Idongesit Bassey said on Thursday in Abuja.

According to her, as the largest economy in Africa with great potential for development, especially in ICT, Nigeria stood the chance of creating more job opportunities and ensuring accelerated national development.

She said that Huawei would continue to initiate programmes that would assist in bridging the gap between industry requirements and the academia, particularly with regards to ICT.

One of such programmes according to her, is ‘Job Fair’ , which the company instituted in 2018, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The media manager said that the job fair was Huawei’s talent cultivation strategy to not only provide the best trainings, but recruite the best talents.

According to her, the fair which is an annual event, has seen to the recruitment of many Nigerian youths and enegament of several students on internship.

She said that with the exception of year 2020, when the fair did not hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Huawei had employed about 30 youths since the fair commenced.

Bassey said that the company had engaged about 100 students on internship within the period.

She further noted that aside the 30 youths employed by Huawei, several others had been engaged by other companies that came for the job fairs.

Bassey said that the 2022 job fair slated for August 3, would be a huge departure from the previous ones.

She unlike previous job fairs that held on school campuses, the 2022 edition would hold outside the campus and would be more elaborate.

“This is going to be the biggest job fair so far, because it will hold outside of the school campus.

“We will have oil and gas companies, IT companies, as well as outsourcing companies in attendance.

“This will afford candidates the opportunity to listen and connect to prospective employers.”

According to her, recruiters will be looking out for Huawei certified applicants, experienced applicants, interns and graduate trainees.

“This is also open to NYSC members needing a place of primary assignment,” she said.

Bassey further said the job fair was intended to attract qualified candidates for job opportunities in IP technologies and Information Technology.

“Other openings will be in Channel Management, Programming, Data Engineering, Account Management, Delivery Management, Procurement and Channel Sales.

“Companies in attendance will include Huawei, its partners, customers and contractors,” she said.

She urged the youth to take advantage of the opportunity to showcase their potential for possible engagement.

“This is a great opportunity for Nigerian youths to showcase the stuff they are made of.

On the achievements of the company over the years, Bassey said that Huawei had continually leveraged on technologies, knowledge and experience garnered.

She noted that in carrying out its mission, particularly in Nigeria, Huawei had continually partnered with the qgovernment, the academia and other stakeholders.

“The Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy has partnered with Huawei in developing the ICT talents by signing an MoU.

“The MOU is on training of 3,000 students on ICT to expand the digital economy.

“This is done through different initiatives like the Huawei ICT Academy.

“The academy has partnered over 100 educational institutions in Nigeria, including Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in Kaduna and University of Port Harcourt in Rivers, among others,” she said.
