Nigerian firms set to build reliable database

Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC) is to collaborate with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to create and maintain a reliable identity database for the country.
The Managing Director, NSPM, Mr Abbas Masanawa, who paid a courtesy visit on the Director General of NIMC, Malam Aliyu Aziz said there was need to discuss possible ways of collaborating with the commission on its mandate.
He explained that NSPM is tasked with the responsibility of among other things, to print all security documents in the country.
Masanawa said that this would enable government to create employment, stabilise exchange rates and strengthen the economy.
“We are ready to domesticate the printing of the National e-ID Card by scaling up our equipment and capacity to meet up to the NIMC standard of card production and personalisation.
“Just like we did with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in printing electoral materials, we will do with other critical organisations.
“I believe that this partnership will allow us to be part of the success story of NIMC, as we all strive to take our organisations to the next level,” he said.
Similarly, Aziz briefed the team on the mandate of the commission and the new Federal Government initiative.
He explained that the initiative would enable government to enrol all Nigerians and legal residents including those in the Diaspora, children and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) into the National Identity Database (NIDB).
He said they would be issued with National Identification Number (NIN) using the identity ecosystem approach.
He said that the ecosystem approach is a sustainable system scheduled to commence in January, 2019.
According to him, this will allow any of the data collecting government agencies or licensed private organisations to enrol and capture data from citizens.
He explained that the data would be sent back to NIMC to avoid duplication of effort as well as save taxpayers money.
