Kano State Government says it will develop 1,000 hectare farmlands for cultivation at Watari Irrigation Scheme in Bagwai Local Government Area of the state.
Alhaji Muhammad-Garba, Project Coordinator, Kano State Agro Pastoral Development Project (KSADP), stated this in a statement signed by Mr Ameen Yassar, the project’s Communication Specialist, on Saturday in Kano.
The statement said that the Coordinator made the disclosure at a meeting with various stakeholders in Kano.
Muhammad-Garba said the multimillion Naira project would be executed with the support of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).
The project, he said, was designed to encourage agricultural activities, improve livelihood of the people and boost state revenue base.
“For the past 40 years, irrigation at Watari is about 962 hectares, and many families benefit from it.
“With the development of additional 1,000 hectares in the next two years, you can imagine how many more peasant farmers will get job and be lifted out of poverty.
“The project will be funded with grant from the IsDB to improve agriculture and livestock production in the state.
“Investment in irrigation infrastructure is one major step we are taking to achieve our goals,” Muhammad-Garba was quoted as saying in the statement.
He, therefore, urged farmers and other stakeholders to support the project to enable it to achieve its objectives.
