Fair officials want investors in agric sector

The Chairman of Riyom Local Government in Plateau, Mr Mafeng Gwalson, has called on investors to invest in the agricultural sector as a means of diversifying the state’s economy.

Gwalson made the call in a keynote address delivered at the Plateau Northern Senatorial District day at the ongoing Jos International Trade Fair on Thursday.

He said that the theme of the fair “A platform for promoting tourism potential on the Plateau” was timely considering the importance of agriculture and tourism.

“Plateau State has a very good climate for agriculture and also a good topography for tourism which will give a drive toward resuscitating this milestone focus, and a tool for economic diversification from petroleum,” he said.

He commended the efforts of the state government for providing an enabling atmosphere to promote commercial agriculture and tourism in the state.

’` We thank the government for boosting agriculture in the state and for the timely procurement and distribution of fertilizer and for making it available to farmers,” he said.

The chairman also commended the government for its tractorization policy which had encouraged agricultural mechanization in the state.

“We now have Anchor Borrowers System where our agricultural products are market to the applause of farmers in the state,” said the chairman.

He however, said that there was need for investors to invest heavily in agriculture and tourism in the state so as to create employment opportunity and revenue diversification sources in the state.
