More than 2,000 containers have been transported to Modjjo Dry Port since the dry port was linked to the Ethio-Djibouti Railway line two months ago.
According to Ethio-Djibouti Railway Transport Share Company and Ethiopian Maritime Transport and Logistics Enterprise, linking the dry port with the railway line has opened a new chapter in the economic development of the country.
Ethio-Djibouti Railway Transport Share Company Director-General, Tilahun Sarka said the linkage of the railway line with the dry port will play a vital role in further enhancing the foreign trade of the country.
According to him, the establishment of the linkage has created a favorable condition which will help to end port storage duties as goods can be transported to the dry port within eight days without incurring warehouse expenses.
Tariff payments on the railway line are reduced by 30 percent as compared to transportation by heavy trucks.
The linkage between the railway line and the dry port is also expected to markedly reduce the congestion at Djibouti.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Maritime and Logistics Enterprise, Captain Tefera Bedasso told ENA that the linkage between the dry port and the railway line will enhance the nation’s economic development.
He added that the connection between the dry port and the railway line has helped promote logistics services and markedly reduced the time and energy required to facilitate trade.
Tefera said the laxity on the part of businesspersons to collect their containers on time has been a hurdle, particularly with transactions related to government bodies.
