NSE record trade upbeat, index up 1.28%

Activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Friday remained upbeat for the fifth consecutive day, with the All-Share Index growing by 1.28 per cent to cross 26,000 mark.

The index rose by 332.20 points or 1.28 per cent to close at 26,319.34, compared with 25,987.14 recorded on Thursday.

In the same vein, the market capitalisation grew by N173 billion to close at N13.754 trillion, from N13.581 trillion on Thursday.

Nigerian Breweries led the gainers’ table, appreciating by N4.70 to close at N52.55 per share.

Presco followed with N3.50 to close at N53, while Dangote Cement appreciated by N3.10 to close at N139 per share.

Stanbic IBTC garnered N1.40 to close at N40.50, while Flour Mills gained N1.35 to close at N21.50 per share.

On the other hand, Northern Nigeria Flour Mills topped the laggards’ chart, losing 45k to close at N4.05 per share.

Cadbury trailed with 40k to close at N7, while Oando was down by 22k to close at N2.30 per share.

Dangote Sugar Refinery dipped 20k to close at N12.30, while UACN also lost 20k to close at N6.10 per share.

Sterling Bank was the most active, exchanging 79.58 million shares valued at N92.31 million.

Zenith Bank came second with an account of 50.75 million shares worth N878.62 million, while FBN Holdings traded 34.22 million shares valued at N176.20 million.

United Bank for Africa sold accounted for 26.69 million shares worth N163.15 million, while Access Bank exchanged 22.22 million shares worth N147.94 million.

In all, the volume of shares traded dipped 6.66 per cent as investors bought and sold 335.75 million shares valued at N4.28 billion in 4,231 deals.

This was in contrast with 359.31 million shares worth N3.87 billion exchanged in 3,576 deals on Thursday.

Stock market records N94.45bn transactions in August

The total transactions in Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) dropped by 8.49

percent to N94.45 billion in August 2020.

This was disclosed in the NSE’s Domestic & Foreign Portfolio Investment Report released on Thursday.

The report showed that total transactions dipped 8.49 per cent when compared with N103.21 billion recorded in July.

The total value of transactions executed by domestic investors during the period under review outperformed transactions executed by foreign investors by 18 per cent.

Consequently, domestic investors accounted for 59 per cent of the total transactions, while foreign investors accounted for 41 per cent.

An analysis of the total transactions revealed that total domestic transactions decreased by 19.16 per cent from N68.62 billion in July to N55.47 billion in August.

It said that total foreign transactions increased by 12.69 per cent to N38.98 billion from N34.59 billion in July.

The report said that institutional investors outperformed retail investors by four per cent, accounting for 52 per cent compared with 48 per cent posted by retail investors.

“A comparison of domestic transactions in the current and prior month revealed that retail transactions decreased by 18.22% from N32.54 billion in July 2020 to N26.61 billion in August 2020.

“The institutional composition of the domestic market decreased by 20.01 per cent from N36.08 billion in July 2020 to N28.86 billion in August 2020,” it said.

Further breakdown of the report indicated that foreign inflow stood at N17.66 billion in August against N13.70 billion in July.

Conversely, foreign outflow rose to N21.32 billion in August from N20.89 billion achieved in July.

Over a 13 year period, domestic transactions decreased by 72.30 per cent from N3.556 trillion in 2007 to N985 billion in 2019 whilst foreign transactions increased by 53.08 per cent from N616 billion to N943 billion over the same period.

“Total domestic transactions accounted for about 51 per cent of the total transactions carried out in 2019,” said the report.

NSE capitalisation sustains growth by N67bn

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) key market indicators on Wednesday sustained positive rally, appreciating by 0.50 per cent due to monetary policy rate cut to 11.5 per cent.

Speficially, the market capitalisation rose by N67 billion to close at N13.474 trillion against N13.407 trillion recorded on Tuesday.

Also, the NSE All-Share Index inched higher by 128.12 points or 0.50 per cent to close at 25,783.02 from 25,654.90 achieved on Tuesday.

The performance was supported by bargain buying in MTN Nigeria Communications, Nigerian Breweries, Seplat, Mobil and Flour Mills.

Consequently, the month-to-date gain increased to 1.8 per cent while the year-to-date loss moderated to -4.0 per cent.

Analysts at Cordros Capital Ltd had predicted that the fixed income market would see a downward adjustment in yields, thereby making the equities market more attractive.

Market sentiment closed positive with 21 gainers in contrast with 14 losers.

International Breweries and Prestige Assurance dominated the gainers’ chart in percentage terms, rising by 10 per cent each to close at N3.60 and 60k per share, respectively.

UACN Property grew by 5.26 per cent to close at N1, while Seplat appreciated by 3.90 per cent to close at N400 per share.

Conversely, Associated Bus Company led the laggards’ chart in percentage terms, dropping 9.09 per cent to close at 30k per share.

Royal Exchange trailed with a loss of 6.90 per cent to close at 27k, while Eterna lost 6.72 per cent to close at N2.50 per share.

NPF Micro Finance Bank shed 6.15 per cent to close at N1.22, while AIICO Insurance depreciated by 3.37 per cent to close at 86k per share.

Transactions in the shares of Sterling Bank topped the activity chart with 85.21 million shares valued at N97.99 million.

FBN Holdings sold 82.74 million shares worth N413.70 million, while Access Bank exchanged 58.21 million shares valued at N366.71 million.

Zenith Bank traded 28.45 million shares worth N480.21 million, while MTNN accounted for 25.72 million shares valued at N3.13 billion.

In all, the volume of shares traded increased by 58.05 per cent as investors bought and sold 414.16 million shares worth N6.28 billion in 3,793 deals.

This was in contrast with 262.05 million shares valued at N4.39 billion achieved in 3,254 deals on Tuesday.

Associated Bus Company dominated the gainers’ chart in percentage terms, rising 10 per cent to close at 33k per share.

Wapic Insurance followed 8.11 per cent to close at 40k, while UACN appreciated by 5.79 per cent to close at N6.40 per share.

Mutual Benefits Assurance improved by five per cent to close at 21k, while Cornerstone Insurance appreciated by 4.92 per cent to close at 64k per share.

Conversely, Champion Breweries led the losers’ chart in percentage terms, dropping 10 per cent to close at 81k per share.

Red Star Express trailed with a loss 9.20 per cent to close at N2.96, while Japaul Oil dipped 4.76 per cent to close at 20k per share.

Regency Alliance Insurance Company shed 4.17 per cent to close at 23k, while Jaiz Bank depreciated by 3.39 per cent to close at 57k per share.

The volume of shares traded increased by 1.36 per cent with a turnover of 196.12 million shares worth N1.73 billion in 3,542 deals.

This was against an exchange of 193.49 million shares valued at N1.85 billion transacted in 2,934 deals on Friday.

Transactions in the shares of FBN Holdings topped the activity chart with 43.39 million shares worth N214.45 million.

Chams came second with 26.21 million shares valued at N5.26 million, while United Bank for Africa sold 13.19 million shares worth N79.09 million.

Mutual Benefits Assurance accounted for 12.23 million shares valued at N2.51 million, while Zenith Bank sold 11.66 million shares worth N195.08 million.

Consumers must get value for money, FG tells service providers

The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment has charged users of weighing and measuring instruments to ensure that consumers get correct quantity and value for their goods and services.

The charge was made on Monday in Lokoja by the Ministry’s Department of Weighing and Measurement in a statement.

The statement which was issued at the end of a four-day Post COVID-19 sensitisation exercise in Kogi State also called on the users to meet their obligations to the government.

The leader of the sensitisation team, Mr Okechukwu Ejiofor, an Assistant Director in the Department signed the statement.

He said that the objective of the exercise was to enlighten the stakeholders on their rights and responsibilities in the use of weighing and measuring instruments for trade.

He added that it was also to educate weighing and measuring instruments’ users on the effects of the ministry’s regulatory activities on their businesses.

“The exercise became necessary considering the fact that businesses will face challenges as they emerge from the lockdown brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Businesses mostly affected are those that use weighing and measuring instruments for trade.

“Such businesses include, but are not limited to LPG (domestic gas) retail outlets, manufacturers of prepackages like cement, bottled water, soft drinks and bread, and petroleum products retail outlets,” he said.

According to Ejiofor , weighing and measuring instruments’ users must ensure that they have valid certificates of verification and be up-to-date in the payment of necessary statutory fees to government.

Ejiofor said that it was unlawful to use a weighing or measuring instrument for trade without a valid certificate of verification issued by the Weights and Measures Department.

Stock market records fall in trade volume by 45.46%

The volume of shares traded on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Friday dropped by 45.46 per cent.

Speficially, investors sold and bought 137.05 million shares worth N920.53 million in 2,869 deals.

This was in contrast with 251.29 million shares valued at N1.58 billion exchanged in 2,954 deals on Thursday.

Access Bank drove the activity chart, accounting for 25.78 million shares worth N162.51 million.

FBN Holdings accounted for 15.65 million shares valued at N77.66 million, while FTN Cocoa traded 11.34 million shares valued at N2.34 million.

Royal Exchange accounted for 11.18 million shares worth N2.54 million, while FCMB traded 8.13 million shares valued at N17.18 million.

However, the market capitalisation rose by two billion naira or 0.02 per cent to close at N13.203 trillion against N13.201 trillion recorded on Thursday.

Also, the All-Share Index increased by 5.12 points or 0.02 per cent to close at 25,309.37 from 25,304.25 achieved on Thursday.

CAP recorded the highest gain to lead the gainers’ chart, gaining 55k to close at N16.70 per share.

Guaranty Trust Bank came second with 20k to close at N25.40, while Access Bank gained 15k to close at N6.40 per share.

United Capital increased by 5k to close at N3.10, while FCMB Group also gained 5k to close at N2.15 per share.

Conversely, Guinness led the losers’ chart, dropping by N1.45 to close at N14.15 per share.

FBN Holdings trailed 10k to close at N4.95, while Ecobank Transnational Incorporated dipped 5k to close at N3.90 per share.

Jaiz Bank lost 5k to close at 58k, while UACN also dropped 5k to close at N5.70 per share.

NSE market capitalisation loses N152bn

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) market capitalisation on Tuesday inched lower by N152 billion, amid sell pressure in 27 stocks.

Specifically, the market capitalisation which opened at N11.945 trillion lost N152 billion or 1.27 per cent to close at N11.794 trillion.

Also, the All-Share Index (ASI) dipped 290.49 points or 1.27 per cent to close at 22,629.92 compared with 22,920.41 on Monday.

The downturn was impacted by losses recorded in medium and large capitalised stocks, amongst which were; Guaranty Trust Bank, Julius Berger, Zenith Bank, Lafarge Africa and Seplat.

Mr Ambrose Omordion, the Chief Operating Officer, InvestData Ltd., attributed the development to profit taking to correct the recent sharp divergence between the market rally and economic realities.

Omordion added that negative news of further crash in crude oil prices as supply remained high on low demand due to global lockdown contributed to the price drop.

He noted that negative macro-economic indices as shown by March inflation data released today by the National Bureau of Statistics, contributed to market sentiments.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that market breadth closed negative with only four gainers against 27 losers.

Champion Breweries and Oando dominated the losers’ chart in percentage terms, dropping by 10 per cent each, to close at 81k and N2.25 per share, respectively.

Lafarge Africa came second with a loss of 9.21 per cent to close at N10.35 per share.

Fidelity Bank lost 8.99 per cent to close at N1.72, while Chams shed 8.70 per cent to close at 21k per share.

On the other hand, Omoluabi Mortgage Bank led the gainers’ table with 9.09 per cent, to close at 60k per share.

NPF Micro Finance Bank followed with a gain 8.70 per cent to close at N1.25 per share.

Lasaco Assurance increased by 4.17 per cent to close at 25k, while Learn Africa appreciated by 2.11 per cent to close at 97k per share.

The total volume of shares traded declined by 27.53 per cent as investors transacted 250.35 million shares worth N2.33 billion exchanged in 4,877 deals.

This was in contrast with 345.44 million valued N4.21 billion achieved in 4,930 deals on Monday.

Transactions in the shares of FBN Holdings topped the activity chart with 71.06 million shares worth N298.70 million.

Zenith Bank accounted for 52.20 million shares valued N695.03 million, while Guaranty Trust Bank traded 24.44 million shares worth N451.86 million.

United Bank for Africa sold 15.17 million shares valued  N85.91 million, while Fidelity Bank transacted 13.29 million shares worth N22.95 million.
