SON warns manufacturers against substandard products

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has warned manufacturers against production and circulation of substandard products in the country.

The Director-General of the organisation,  Mr Farouq Salim, gave the warning at the presentation of the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) to six Bauchi based manufacturers, on Thursday in Bauchi.

Salim was represented by Alhaji Adamu Abba, the Northeast Regional Coordinator of the organisation.

SON, according to him, is an organisation that protects consumers from locally manufactured substandard and unsafe products.

He said the programme was aimed at covering all products manufactured in Nigeria, to promote fair competition and distinction between quality and substandard product.

“Through deriving both genuine manufacturers and consumers the opportunity and value for money for good services provided in Nigerian market,” Salim said.

Earlier, Hajiya Hauwa Hussein, Bauchi State Coordinator of SON, said the certification was to provide guarantees of safety and confidence to manufacturers and consumers.

Hussein said the organisation would ensure that all locally manufactured products conform with the requirements of the relevant Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS).

She said six manufacturers revalidated their certificates while others got new certificates in the state.

The Coordinator listed the manufacturers to include Sky Bakery; Rahma Zango Bakery, Khalid 212 Bakery, Shawwal Bakery, Assea Bakery and Masna Table Water.

Hussein urged manufacturers to certify their products to guarantee safety, boost global market access and consumer confidence as well as enhance wealth creation and employment generation.

She also called on consumers to express dissatisfaction, through consumer complaint desks on any substandard products sold to them in stores, markets or companies.

In a remark, Alhaji Baba Kawuji, Director of Trade, Bauchi State Ministry of Commerce and Industry, commended SON for ensuring that manufacturers produce quality products for the citizens in the state.

He urged manufacturers who are yet to certify their products to do so to enable them to key into other economic benefits in the state.
