Commission chairperson, Moussa Faki<br \/>\nMahamat, these three have made no commitment to the deal signed in<br \/>\nKigali in March 2018. The A.U. chief said the body\u2019s projection was to<br \/>\nhave all nations on board so that the AfCFTA could enter into force in<br \/>\nJanuary 2019.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nOn the flip side, six African countries have since ratified the deal<br \/>\n whiles the vast majority of countries have only signed it. The six are:<br \/>\n Rwanda, Niger, Chad, Kenya, Ghana and Swaziland (eSwatini.)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThree others \u2013 Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana \u2013 have only signed the<br \/>\nKigali Declaration but have yet to sign the deal and deposit instruments<br \/>\n of ratification with the A.U.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nBack in Kigali, 44 of the 55 African Union Heads of State and<br \/>\nGovernment enacted the AfCFTA at its 10th Extraordinary Session, under<br \/>\nthe leadership of Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe Kigali declaration as it is known was also witnessed by<br \/>\nPresident Paul Kagame of Rwanda as current AU Chairperson and<br \/>\nChairperson of the AU Commission.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nNigeria and South Africa\u2019s refusal to join from the beginning raised<br \/>\n issues with the deal given that the two were the continent\u2019s economic<br \/>\npowerhouses. <\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nSouth Africa subsequently signed the deal but Nigeria insisted that<br \/>\nit was doing broader consultations back home before any concrete<br \/>\ndecision is made. President Buhari recently intimated that he would sign<br \/>\n the deal soon.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nOnce in force AfCFTA will be the largest trade zone in the world,<br \/>\nincrease intra-African trade by 52% by the year 2022, remove tariffs on<br \/>\n90% of goods, liberalise services and tackle other barriers to<br \/>\nintra-African trade, such as long delays at border posts.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nIt will be one of the biggest free trade bloc in the world, maybe only behind the World Trade Organization (WTO).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe signing of the AfCFTA by heads of governments and or their<br \/>\nrepresentatives is only a step in chasing an ambitious dream of uniting<br \/>\nAfrica at the level of commerce.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nExperts and watchers say, the real work is yet to take off, all<br \/>\nthings being equal.
