\nThe African Heritage Institution
\n(Afri-Heritage), a socio-political and economic analytical and
\nresearch-based institute, has challenged institutions, groups and
\nindividual economists to proffer lasting solutions to severe poverty
\n in Africa.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Executive Director of Afri-Heritage,
\nProf. Ufo Okeke-Uzodike, gave the challenge during his opening remark at
\n a two-day international conference holding in Enugu, Nigeria.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe international conference theme is: \u2018\u2018Economics of Sustainable Growth in Africa.\u2019\u2019<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOkeke-Uzodike noted that economists
\nneeded robust engagements on how to fuel our economies across the
\ncontinent to grow at the double digit levels needed to effect
\ntransformative change.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe urged economists to take the challenge
\n as a matter of urgency and move the continent away from crushing
\npoverty confronting the people.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u2018\u2018So, in Nigeria and around our
\ncontinent, the quest for sustainable economic growth is a driver of
\ngovernment concerns and policy.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u2018\u2018African countries should plot their
\ndevelopment, not only by domestic economic activities, but also through
\nbilateral and multilateral trade and inter-governmental support systems.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u2018\u2018However, in spite of significant
\nimprovements in policy spaces across the region, Africa continues to
\nexperience serious challenges due to highly uneven economic growth
\npatterns.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u2018\u2018This challenge is made less tenable by
\ninadequate growth rates for the world\u2019s poorest region, youngest region,
\n and demographically fastest growing region.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u2018\u2018The net effect is that poverty has become an existential threat across many African countries.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u2018\u2018Indeed, Nigeria, Africa\u2019s biggest economy is also the country with the world\u2019s largest extremely poor people,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe executive director hoped that deliberations from the seminar would yield policy recommendations for policy-makers.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn a keynote speech, Prof. Hyacinth
\nIchoku, with the Department of Economics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka
\n(UNN), said that sustainable growth means inclusive growth that catered
\nfor everyone in a nation.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIchoku, a Professor of Economics,
\nhowever, advised African countries to focus on labour-intensive
\nindustrial growth in order to create jobs and opportunities to carry
\neveryone along in their individual countries.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u2018\u2018Leaders in Africa must get their people
\n out of poverty by looking into agriculture and cottage industries,
\nwhich can be easily financed by these countries going with their
\nrelatively financial incapability.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u2018\u2018So, labour-intensive modal of
\nsustainable development should be adopted so that no one is left behind
\nin the growth of any African country,\u2019\u2019 he noted.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\nMore than 150 scholars with economic
\nbackground from various institutions within and outside the country
\nattended the conference.
