{"id":47261,"date":"2022-12-20T04:12:13","date_gmt":"2022-12-20T04:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/?p=47261"},"modified":"2022-12-20T04:12:18","modified_gmt":"2022-12-20T04:12:18","slug":"union-affirms-availability-of-frozen-catfish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/old\/union-affirms-availability-of-frozen-catfish\/","title":{"rendered":"Union affirms availability of frozen catfish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Catfish Farmers Association of Nigeria (CAFAN) has affirmed the availability of frozen catfish for local consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CAFAN National chairman, Mr Sunday Onoja, said on Monday in Lagos that the reason for the introduction of frozen catfish is curtail the excesses of unscrupulous middlemen who exploit local fish farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him \u201cFrozen Catfish has started in Lagos state and it has come to stay. We celebrate CAFAN Lagos state chapter for setting the ball rolling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a two- way action plan as we are trying to get fresh home-grown fish fully available on Nigerians tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe second reason for engaging in frozen catfish is to bring stability to the prices of fish and obliterate excessive exploitation of middlemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe off-takers usually make local fish farmers sell below their production cost as they have no choice but to sell to avoid losses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Onoja said that there was need to add value to catfish by freezing them for sale, catfish farmers will continue to run at a loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the adding value to catfish by introducing frozen catfish in large quantity would help boost sustainability and growth of the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, he said frozen catfish would help local farmers cut their losses and increase their productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe decided to look inward by adding value to catfish by freezing them so as not to be at the mercies of middlemen who most times determine the price of the produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c I have close to 300,000 fish in my ponds ready for sale but in some months i have not even sold up to 2 to 3 tons and I keep feeding them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo to cut losses it is better to keep the fish frozen and sell at my convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIcing helps us cut losses and covers perishability.
