{"id":47091,"date":"2022-12-09T18:52:58","date_gmt":"2022-12-09T18:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/?p=47091"},"modified":"2022-12-09T18:53:07","modified_gmt":"2022-12-09T18:53:07","slug":"firs-says-governments-must-build-trust-to-elicit-tax-payment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/old\/firs-says-governments-must-build-trust-to-elicit-tax-payment\/","title":{"rendered":"FIRS says governments must build trust to elicit tax payment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has urged all tiers of government to spend public funds judiciously to build trust and encourage citizens to pay taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its Director, Emerging and Special Taxes, Mrs Amina Ado, gave the advice in Abuja at a \u201cGovernment-to-Citizens\/FIRS interface forum with stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ado noted that government would get more Nigerians to pay taxes if budgetary allocations were tailored to provide visible infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is not just the infrastructure, but also the need to run the economy in a way that there will be confidence for people to invest because it is only when they invest that we can get the taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also need to make sure that funds are used judiciously and in a way that will reduce the cost of governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe federal budget is not too much after the expenditure of the Executive and other arms of government had been deducted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to create more trust and an environment where Nigerians are willing and able to invest and are excited to be Nigerians,\u2019\u2019 Ado said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She challenged Nigerians to hold public office holders to account as they were the ones spending taxes collected and not the FIRS which only collected taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCitizens have to hold political office holders accountable and they hold us accountable for delivering on our target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey have given us a target of N10.4 trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf Nigerians need to know what their taxes are being used for, the Budget Office\u2019s website is there; they release a quarterly budget implementation report; Nigerians can engage with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the budget process, the Budget Office also releases what it calls a citizens\u2019 guide to the budget,\u2019\u2019 she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, convener of the programme, the Senior Special Adviser on Political Matters to the President, Mr Bode Gbore, said that it was organised to open the channel of direct conversation between government and the citizenry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been proven that Nigerians are interested in making contributions to the development and well-being of the nation,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interface had \u201cGovernment to Citizen Interface: Tax in present day Nigeria\u2019\u2019 as its theme.<\/p>\n\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-47091\" data-postid=\"47091\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-47091 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has urged all tiers of government to spend public funds judiciously to build trust and encourage citizens to pay taxes.
