Elon Musk has completed his takeover of Twitter and has ousted several senior executives in his first move at the top of the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The billionaire appeared to confirm media reports of his takeover, tweeting early on Friday: \u201cthe bird is freed\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A U.S. court had set a deadline of Friday for the Tesla and SpaceX boss to complete his 44 billion dollar acquisition of the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twitter has not published further statement confirming the deal, but several senior figures and board members, including Brett Taylor, who served as the company\u2019s chairman, changed their social media profiles to reflect that they no longer work for the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to reports, Mr Musk\u2019s first act upon taking charge of the company was to dismiss chief executive, Parag Agrawal, chief financial officer, Ned Segal, general counsel and head of safety, Vijaya Gadde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Musk had publicly criticised both Mr Agrawal and Ms Gadde over Twitter policy in the months leading up to the takeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His chief criticism of the social media platform has been its policing of \u201cfree speech\u2019\u2019he has said he believes Twitter has been overzealous in its content moderation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Musk is expected to speak to twitter employees directly, according to an internal memo cited in several media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A U.S. court gave Mr Musk until Friday to close his April agreement to acquire the company after he tried to back out of the deal, leading to a lawsuit from Twitter to push through the acquisition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, Mr Musk posted a statement aimed at Twitter\u2019s advertisers where he said he was acquiring the platform because he believed it was important to have a space where \u201ca wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That came after the billionaire SpaceX and Tesla boss posted a bizarre video of himself entering Twitter\u2019s headquarters on Wednesday carrying a sink alongside the message \u201cEntering Twitter HQ let that sink in\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has also updated his bio on the social media platform to \u201cChief Twit\u201d in a further nod to the deal being completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Musk is said to have told staff during his visit to twitter\u2019s head office on Wednesday that it was not true that he was planning on cutting up to 75 per cent of Twitter staff after acquiring the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It had previously been reported that Mr Musk told investors he planned to cut around three-quarters of the firm\u2019s 7,500 employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Staff, Twitter users and industry experts are waiting to see what plans Musk has for the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has previously spoken of his belief in \u201cabsolute free speech\u201d and suggested he would allow previously suspended and often controversial figures, including former U.S president Donald Trump, to return to the platform, which has alarmed online safety campaigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There have been reports that many staff plan to leave the company once the takeover is completed and some security campaigners have warned that Twitter could become an easy target for hackers in the aftermath of the deal and as Mr Musk restructures the firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In spite of this internal confusion and low morale tied to fears of layoffs or a dismantling of the company\u2019s culture and operations, Twitter leaders this week have at least outwardly welcomed Mr Musk\u2019s arrival and messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The billionaire has been pictured meeting with staff over several days at its San Francisco headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of his plans for the site, Mr Musk has also spoken of removing all spam and boot accounts from the site and using Twitter as part of a so-called \u201ceverything app\u2019\u2019 called X, where users are able to access a wide range of services in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is similar to WeChat in China, where users are able to access social media, online shopping and money transfer, taxi hire, restaurant booking and more from within one app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twitter will have to comply with new European Union rules tackling misinformation and hate speech on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
EU Commissioner, Thierry Breton, said on Friday after Elon Musk\u2019s takeover of the U.S. messaging service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn Europe, the bird will fly by our EU rules,\u201d Breton wrote on Twitter referring to the social media platform\u2019s logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was replying to a tweet by Elon Musk reading \u201cthe bird is free\u201d with which he announced his takeover hours earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Musk has justified his purchase by stating the need to protect and strengthen freedom of speech, with critics being concerned that the change in ownership would result in less moderated content and thus encourage hate speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Breton added \u201c#DSA\u201d to his message referring to the bloc\u2019s Digital Services Act, a recent landmark regulation which spells out the responsibilities for technology and internet companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The law means companies will have to moderate their platforms for harmful content like disinformation and introduce protocols to block the spread of dangerous material during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Companies must also increase transparency regarding interactions with users and simplify user agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Breton also reminded Musk of comments made by him in May that he intended to comply with the new EU content moderation rules if he were to acquire Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n
