{"id":44379,"date":"2022-08-09T02:10:25","date_gmt":"2022-08-09T02:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/?p=44379"},"modified":"2022-08-09T02:11:31","modified_gmt":"2022-08-09T02:11:31","slug":"world-bank-rates-nigeria-5th-in-ida-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/old\/world-bank-rates-nigeria-5th-in-ida-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"World Bank rates Nigeria 5<sup>th<\/sup> in IDA debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Bank Fiscal Year 2021 audited financial statements, known as the IDA financial statement, has rated Nigeria fifth on the list with $11.7 billion IDA debt stock as of June 30, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rising debt has pushed Nigeria up the World Bank\u2019s top 10 International Development Association borrowers\u2019 list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly released World Bank Fiscal Year 2022 audited financial statements for IDA showed that Nigeria has moved to the fourth position on the list, with $13 billion IDA debt stock as of June 30, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shows that Nigeria accumulated about $1.3 billion IDA debt within a fiscal year, with the country taking over the fourth top debtor position from Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This debt is different from the outstanding loan of $486 million from World Bank\u2019s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The top five countries on the list slightly reduced their IDA debt stock except Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India, which is still the first on the list reduced its IDA debt stock from $22 billion in the previous fiscal year to $19.7 billion, followed by Bangladesh from $18.1 billion to $18 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is followed by Pakistan which cut its debt from $16.4 billion to $15.8 billion, and lastly, Vietnam, which went down the list to fifth position, from $14.1 billion to $12.9 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nigeria has the highest IDA debt in Africa, as the top three IDA borrowers (India, Bangladesh and Pakistan) are from Asia. The World Bank disclosed recently that Nigeria\u2019s debt, which may be considered sustainable for now, is vulnerable and costly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank said, \u201cNigeria\u2019s debt remains sustainable, albeit vulnerable and costly, especially due to large and growing financing from the Central Bank of Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Washington-based global financial institution added that the country\u2019s debt was also at risk of becoming unsustainable in the event of macro-fiscal shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bank further expressed concerns over the nation\u2019s cost of debt servicing, which according to it, disrupted public investments and critical service delivery spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/nigeria-three-others-top-world-bank-debtors-list\/\">Punch<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/punchng.com\/nigeria-three-others-top-world-bank-debtors-list\/\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-44379\" data-postid=\"44379\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-44379 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Bank Fiscal Year 2021 audited financial statements, known as the IDA financial statement, has rated Nigeria fifth on the list with $11.7 billion IDA debt stock as of June 30, 2021.
