The base station site was completely \u2018powerless\u2019 until wirelessly powered over the air through a laser beam. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ability to safely transfer power across distances without having to be connected to the power grid eliminates one of the big obstacles we have when building new cell sites. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe time savings and flexibility gains will make this an attractive solution for our customers,\u201d he noted. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Claes Olsson, Executive Chairman, PowerLight Technologies, said that most people only aware that wireless charging technology was available for small electronic devices, such as cell phones and watches. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said successful demonstration of the technology underscores the major leaps acheieved recently toward the commercialisation of safe, wireless power transmission for larger-scale systems. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPowerLight is developing systems today to transfer kilowatts of safe power over distances of kilometers that will be commercially available in the next few years. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCommunications service providers will also have the flexibility to position a base station without compromising communication needs in relation to where a power wire is located. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe two companies are exploring the possibility of delivering safe wireless power-beaming capabilities to enable cleaner and more sustainable operations for mobile networks, \u201che said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-36920\" data-postid=\"36920\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-36920 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ericsson in partnership with PowerLight Technologies, a laser light innovator, have announced demonstration of world\u2019s first wireless powered 5G base station. &nbsp;
