\nThe United States and China imposed fresh
\n tariffs on each other\u2019s goods on Monday, as the world\u2019s biggest
\neconomies showed no signs of backing down from an increasing bitter
\ntrade dispute that is expected to knock global economic
\n growth. <\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nBeijing said it was willing to restart
\ntrade negotiations with the United States if the talks are \u201cbased on
\nmutual respect and equality,\u201d Xinhua said, citing a white paper on the
\ntrade dispute published by China\u2019s State Council.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nU.S. tariffs on $200 billion worth of
\nChinese goods and retaliatory tariffs by Beijing on $60 billion worth of
\n U.S. products took effect at midday in Asia, though the initial level
\nof the duties was not as high as earlier feared.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nThe two countries have already slapped tariffs on $50 billion worth of each other\u2019s goods earlier this year.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nChinese products hit with new U.S. duties
\n include vacuum cleaners to internet-connected devices, while U.S. goods
\n targeted by Beijing include liquefied natural gas and certain types of
\naircraft.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nThough a senior White House official last
\n week said the United States will continue to engage China for a
\n\u201cpositive way forward,\u201d neither side has signaled willingness to
\ncompromise.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nThe U.S. official said on Friday there
\nwas no date set for the next round of talks. The Wall Street Journal
\nreported that China, which has accused Washington of being insincere in
\ntrade negotiations, has decided not to send Vice
\n Premier Liu He to Washington this week. <\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nEconomists warn that a protracted dispute
\n will eventually stunt growth not just in the U.S. and China but across
\nthe broader global economy.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nThe trade tensions have also cast a pall
\nover broader relations between Beijing and Washington, with the two
\nsides butting heads on a growing number of issues.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nChina summoned the U.S. ambassador in
\nBeijing and postponed joint military talks in protest against a U.S.
\ndecision to sanction a Chinese military agency and its director for
\nbuying Russian fighter jets and a surface-to-air missile

\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nTrade talks in Washington last month produced no meaningful progress.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

\nRob Carnell, chief Asia economist at ING,
\n said in a note to clients that in the absence of any incentives Beijing
\n would likely hold off on any further negotiations for now.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

\n\u201cIt would look weak both to the U.S. and
\nat home,\u201d he said, adding that there is \u201csufficient stimulus in the
\npipeline\u201d to limit the damage of the latest tariffs on China\u2019s growth.

\n\u201cThe U.S.-China trade war has no clear end in sight.\u201d
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

\nChina may also be waiting for U.S.
\nmid-term elections early next month for any hints of changes in
\nWashington\u2019s policy stance, Carnell added.

\n\u201cWith generic polls favoring the Democrats, they may feel that the trade environment will be less hostile after November 6.\u201d
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

\nThe U.S. administration will levy tariffs
\n of 10 percent on the $200 billion of Chinese products, with the tariffs
\n to go up to 25 percent by the end of 2018.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nBeijing set its new levies on $60 billion
\n of U.S. goods at 5 and 10 percent and warned it would respond to any
\nrise in U.S. tariffs on Chinese products accordingly.

\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nU.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday
\nreiterated a threat to impose further tariffs on Chinese goods should
\nBeijing retaliate, in line with his previous comments signaling that
\nWashington may move to impose tariffs on virtually
\n all imported Chinese goods if the administration does not get its way. <\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nChina imports far less from the United States, making a dollar-for-dollar match on any new U.S. tariffs impossible.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

\nInstead, it has warned of \u201cqualitative\u201d measures to retaliate.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

\nThough Beijing has not revealed what such
\n steps might be, business executives and analysts say China could
\nwithhold exports of certain products to the U.S. or create more
\nadministrative red tape for American companies.

\nSome analysts say there is also a risk
\nthat China could allow its yuan currency to weaken again to cushion the
