\nThe Nigeria Maritime Administration and
\nSafety Agency (NIMASA) has begun the process for the rescue of the 12
\ncrew members crew of a Swiss bulk carrier, MV Glarus, which was hijacked
\n on Saturday by pirates in Rivers state.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nMV Glarus, owned by Allison Shipping, was hijacked by pirates off the Bonny Island in Rivers for a ransom.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nThe NIMASA Director-General, Dr Dakuku
\nPeterside, in Lagos condemned the act and gave the assurance that that
\nthe agency was working hard to ensure the release of the crew.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe are working closely with Forward
\nOperation Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Navy, the Falcon Eye alongside
\nothers to secure their release unconditionally.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe agency is saddened about the attack
\nand the perpetrator will surely be brought to book to serve as deterrent
\n to others,\u201d Peterside said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nAccording to him, the issue of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea is a challenge that must be tackled head-on.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nHe said that the agency would ensure safety on the nation\u2019s waterways.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nNIMASA recently adopted an all encompassing maritime security model tagged, Total Spectrum on Maritime Security Strategy.
\n<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nPirates kidnapped 12 crew members from a
\nSwiss bulk carrier in Nigerian waters which was carrying wheat between
\nLagos and Port Harcourt .<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nIt was attacked around 45 nautical miles south west of Bonny Island in oil rich Niger Delta .<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nThe pirates apparently used long ladders
\nand cut the razor wire on deck to gain access to the vessel and
\ndestroyed the ship\u2019s communications equipment before leaving.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\n Massoel Shipping issued a
\nstatement saying it was working with authorities and specialists to
\nensure a rapid release of those detained.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\n According to the Nigerian
\nMaritime Administration and Safety Agency, seven of the kidnapped men
\nare from the Philippines and one from each of Slovenia, Ukraine,
\nRomania, Croatia and Bosnia.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n
\nThe second quarterly report from the ICC
\nInternational Maritime Bureau, released in July, states that six
\nseparate incidents of crew kidnapping had occurred so far in 2018,
\ninvolving 25 crew members, all in the Gulf of Guinea.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/u> <\/u><\/div>\n

\n The Bureau highlights the
\narea as high-risk and states that the true number of incidents in the
