{"id":29246,"date":"2021-03-28T13:43:21","date_gmt":"2021-03-28T12:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/?p=29246"},"modified":"2021-10-07T00:24:33","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T00:24:33","slug":"petrol-tanker-drivers-threaten-strike-over-safety-valves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/old\/petrol-tanker-drivers-threaten-strike-over-safety-valves\/","title":{"rendered":"Petrol tanker drivers threaten strike over safety valves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened to withdraw services if installation of safety valve was not made mandatory in petroleum trucks with effect from May 1.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The union\u2019s Chairman, Mr Akanni Oladiti made the disclosure in a statement on Sunday,&nbsp; following its Executive Meeting held on March,&nbsp; 27 in Oyo State.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Oladiti said the decision was in view of the fact that union members were usually the first casualties in any situation of fire accidents involving petroleum trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>According to him, the safety valves, if installed will go a long way in reducing the rate of fire accidents involving petroleum trucks and therefore save precious lives and property.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe council in session noted with deep concerns,&nbsp; the inability to fully&nbsp; enforce the compulsory installation of safety valves in all Petroleum trucks to protect the inflammable contents of these trucks from spilling over in a situation of road mishaps.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese fire accidents are becoming too many but definitely avoidable.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe branch executive council in session is not unmindful of the pains and discomforts our decisions and intending actions will have on the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, these are hard and difficult decisions we must take for the sake of our members and even the general public, \u201d the chairman said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>He said also said the union issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to negotiate the renewal of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for new working conditions for&nbsp; tanker drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>He said the expiring CBA had been in operation for the past six years even when the country had been experiencing spiral inflationary trend that was further complicated by the&nbsp; COVID -19 Pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe council in session expresses deep worries that petroleum tanker drivers have been going through harrowing financial situations.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is so, even while rendering selfless national services to ensure delivery of petroleum products to homes and factories in all nooks and crannies of this country, day and nights, in good and bad weather and on highly deplorable highways, \u201d Oladiti said.<\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-29246\" data-postid=\"29246\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-29246 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Petroleum Tanker Drivers Branch of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has threatened to withdraw services if installation of safety valve was not made mandatory in petroleum trucks with effect from May 1.
