{"id":25469,"date":"2020-10-05T08:38:11","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T07:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/?p=25469"},"modified":"2020-10-05T08:38:11","modified_gmt":"2020-10-05T07:38:11","slug":"agency-issues-ultimatum-for-cabotage-registration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thefreezonechannel.com\/old\/agency-issues-ultimatum-for-cabotage-registration\/","title":{"rendered":"Agency issues ultimatum for Cabotage registration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Moses Uwagbale<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has issued a three-month ultimatum to companies engaged in Cabotage services in Nigeria to register all vessels used in coastal and inland waters for such operations.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Philip Kyanet, Head, Corporate Communications, NIMASA, issued the ultimatum in a statement in Lagos.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Kyanet said that in addition to the registration in the applicable Special Register for Cabotage Vessels and Ship Owning companies, they must also obtain the Certificate of Cabotage Registration\/License,<\/p>\n\n\n<p>He said that operators with expired registration certificates are to ensure the renewal of their Cabotage Operational Certificate\/License for all Cabotage vessels within three months.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt the expiration of the three months, NIMASA will notify relevant government authorities and International Oil Companies (IOCs), to bar vessels without valid Cabotage certificates,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Speaking shortly after the agency released a Marine Notice to announce the decision, Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Bashir Jamoh, said that the notice was part of efforts to ensure strict enforcement of the Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>He said that there would also be strict enforcement of the Guidelines on Implementation of the Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Jamoh said that the Cabotage Act, provides that every vessel intended for use in domestic trade, must be duly registered by the Registrar of Ships.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe law provides that every vessel intended for use under the Cabotage Act must be duly registered in the appropriate register and the operational certificates be renewed annually.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are out to ensure strict implementation of NIMASA\u2019s mandate under the law.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cUltimately, our intention is to build and continue to enhance the capacity of Nigerians in the shipping industry in line with relevant international regulations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Moses Uwagbale The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has issued a three-month ultimatum to companies engaged in Cabotage services in Nigeria to register all vessels used in coastal and inland waters for such operations.
