\nThe 400 business outlets belonging to
\nNigerians that were shut in Ghana would soon be re-opened following
\nintervention by relevant authorities.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

\nNigeria\u2019s Deputy President of the Senate,
\n Ike Ekweremadu, said respite was coming the way of the Nigerian
\nbusiness community in Ghana.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe government of the West African
\ncountry has promised to reconsider its policy on foreign businesses,
\nfollowing his intervention.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nEkweremadu said the implementation of the
\n policy had led to the shutting of over 400 shops owned by Nigerians in
\nthe Ashanti Region of Ghana.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe lawmaker, who is a former Speaker of
\nthe Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States, gave
\nthe indication on his Facebook page, following his discussions with the
\nRegional Minister of the Ashanti Region, Simon
\n Osei-Mensah.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Government of Ghana in August this
\nyear ordered the sealing off of over 400 shops belonging to Nigerians at
\n the expiry of an eviction order issued by the Ministry of Trade.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nEkweremadu noted that the freedom of the
\npeoples of the sub-region to ply their trades in any part of West Africa
\n was central to the prosperity of ECOWAS.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe said, \u201cI spoke with the Regional
\nMinister of Ashanti, Ghana, my brother and former deputy at the ECOWAS
\nParliament, Simon Osei-Mensah, over the weekend on the pains of the
\nNigerian business community in the Ashanti Region of
\n Ghana on the sealing off of over 400 Nigerian-owned shops in Ghana,
\nespecially in Kumasi.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe shared thoughts on the need to uphold
\n the spirit and letters of the various ECOWAS Protocols as well as the
\npursuit of the ECOWAS Vision 2020, which aims at a transition from an
\nECOWAS of states to ECOWAS of peoples.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cOsei-Mensah assured me of the safety of
\nNigerian businesses and people in Ghana, noting that he would personally
\n take up the matter with the authorities to ensure that the shops were
\nreopened immediately.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nEkweremadu added, \u201cNigeria and Ghana have
\n come a long way and it is my hope that we will continue to nurture this
\n relationship for the mutual benefit of our respective countries.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cMeanwhile, I am in touch with the
\nNigerian business community in Ghana, including the National President,
\nNigerian Union of Traders Associations, Ghana, Mr Chukwuemeka Nnaji, and
\n I have urged them to remain calm, law-abiding
\n and continue to live in peace with their hosts in the spirit of African
\n and ECOWAS brotherhood.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn the meantime, the Petroleum and
\nNatural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has highlighted the need
\n to reform the nation\u2019s oil and gas industry in a bid to ensure economic
\n development.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nPENGASSAN, in its Independence Day
\nmessage to Nigerians, said the government must resolve to address the
\ngaps in the legal framework guiding operations and activities in the oil
\n and gas industry through the passage of the Petroleum
\n Industry Bill.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nNoting that the PIB had suffered several
\nsetbacks, the President, PENGASSAN, Mr Francis Johnson, said, \u201cThe bill,
\n when passed, will attract and retain more investments. We believe that
\nthe benefits derived from a reformed oil
\n and gas sector will assist in the development of other sectors of the
\neconomy to prepare the country for the future of a nation without oil.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nAccording to the association, the
\nIndependence Day anniversary affords Nigerians the opportunity to review
\n the progress made so far as a nation in its socio-economic and
\npolitical journey, and to appreciate the sacrifice of thousands
\n of forefathers who laid down their lives to make the country breathe
\nthe air of freedom and to keep Nigeria as one united and indivisible
\nnation.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIt said while the country had managed to
\nstay together as a nation with abundant human and natural resources that
\n could make it great, a lot of work would be required for the country to
\n take its rightful place in the global stage.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe statement read in part, \u201cNigeria has
\nhad 19 years of uninterrupted democratic rule. It is also right to say
\nthat Nigerians have made a lot of progress in the field of agriculture,
\ncommerce, banking, and manufacturing.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cHowever, there are many challenges that
\nmust be surmounted for us to be a great nation indeed. Issues of
\ninsecurity, infrastructural decay, nepotism, unemployment, impunity,
\nillegal migration, capital flight, abuse of power and
\n recklessness of the political class continue to dominate national
\ndiscourse.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
