\nTurkish prosecutors have ordered the
\ndetention of 417 suspects in a money-laundering investigation into the
\ntransfer of about 2.5 billion lira ($419 million) worth of foreign
\ncurrency to bank accounts abroad\/<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe vast majority of the recipients of
\nthe funds were Iranian citizens resident in the United States,
\nIstanbul\u2019s chief prosecutor. said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIstanbul police teams were launching
\nraids across a series of provinces, searching properties and detaining
\nmany people, the broadcaster said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nState-owned Anadolu news agency said 216 of the suspects had so far been detained in operations across 40 provinces.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nPolice, the prosecutor and other judicial
\n authorities were not immediately available to comment on the report,
\nwhich was carried by other Turkish media.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe investigation was aimed at those who
\n\u201ctargeted the economic and financial security of the Turkish Republic,\u201d
\nthe Istanbul chief prosecutor\u2019s office said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe issue of foreign money transfers has become politically sensitive in Turkey, which is in the throes of a currency crisis.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe lira has fallen about 40 per cent
\nagainst the dollar this year, prompting President Tayyip Erdogan to warn
\n Turks against sending money abroad if it is not for investment.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe will not forgive those who resort to
\nsmuggling money abroad if it is not to grow, develop and spread their
\nbusiness, trade and investments,\u201d Erdogan said in a speech to business
\nleaders in April.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThere were no indications of any links
\nbetween the current investigation and Erdogan\u2019s push to encourage Turks
\nto keep their money in Turkey.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe suspects were accused of money
\nlaundering, \u201cforming a gang with the aim of committing crime,\u201d and
\n\u201cbreaking a law aimed at preventing the financing of terrorism,\u201d the
\nstatement said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe operation was launched by financial crimes police.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIt said the suspects were accused of receiving commission for sending the money to 28,088 accounts abroad.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe transfers were made from various bank
\n branches and ATMs starting from Jan. 1, 2017 with sums of 5,000 lira
\nand more, the statement said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe crackdown comes months after a U.S.
\ncourt sentenced an executive from Turkey\u2019s state-owned Halkbank to 32
\nmonths in jail in an Iran sanctions-busting case.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe bank has denied any wrongdoing and Turkey has said that case is politically motivated.
