\nThe Nigeria Prison Service (NPS) has
\ncalled on federal and state government agencies to help promote
\nentrepreneurial activities of inmates through its Prisons Industry
\nProgramme.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Controller of Prisons in Enugu, Mr
\nNdubuisi Ogbodo, made the call at the inauguration of the Micro, Small
\nand Medium Enterprises Clinic (MSME) by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at
\nthe Okpara Square, Enugu.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOgbodo said the Nigeria Prisons Industry programme was part of the reformation objective of the Nigeria prisons.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe said that the Nigeria Prisons was
\nsaddled with the responsibility of reforming, rehabilitating and
\nreintegrating prisoners back into the society.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cSo, once a prisoner is admitted, we
\nsubject him\/her to 30 days psychological study in order to know more
\nabout the prisoner in terms of behaviour, desire and thinking.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWhen this study is completed, we then
\nmake informed decisions as to whether the prisoner would perform better
\nunder our National Open University degree programme or our
\nentrepreneurial\/industry programme.\u2019\u2019<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n The industrial programme is
\n necessary because not all of them have the capacity to go through the
\nacademic rigours and so, they prefer to engage in choice handiworks.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cTherefore, we had to create the industry
\n programme to cater for non-educational lovers as a way of reforming,
\nrehabilitating and re-integrating them fully into the society.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe teach them skills like shoe making,
\nfurniture, farming, tailoring and iron works to mention a few and that
\nis why we brought some of them here to display their wares,\u201d he said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n NPS chief however, lamented that lack of funds and tutors was hindering the expansion of the scope of the industry programme.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOne of the major reasons for partaking in
\n the SME clinic was to talk to certain federal government agencies such
\nas Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agencies and Bank of
\nIndustry on how they could help the prisoners expand
\n their handiworks and promote them.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIn addition, Ogbodo said with the
\ncombined effort of the Controller General of Nigerian Prisons and the
\nMinister of Interior, some tools would be provided for prisoners free.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMr Kelvin Enuoka, the Commander in charge
\n of the Nigeria Prisons Industry programme, said the output of the
\nprogramme had been very encouraging and impacting.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n Enuoka said about 50 prisoners were currently involved in the programme of the service.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n \u201cWe have different
\nworkshops where we train prisoners on their skill of choice ranging from
\n tailoring, shoe-making, furniture, farming, iron works and bag making.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n \u201cI was sent abroad by NPS
\nfor training in order to also impart these skills to interested
\nprisoners as a way of rehabilitating and reintegrating them completely
\ninto the society.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n \u201cSo many people are amazed
\nthat such shoes, uniforms and other things as exhibited here are the
\nhandiwork of prisoners such that an aide bought one without knowing it
\nwas one of the prisoners
\n that made it,\u201d he said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n A prisoner under the Industry Programme, Chimezie Okemefuna, said he learnt shoe making through the programme.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n Okemefuna expressed delight
\n that an aide to the vice president bought one of his products, adding
\nthat it gave him hope that shoe making was his calling.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n \u201cThe man had already bought
\n the shoe before he knew that I was the one that made it which makes me
\nproud and I will tell others what happened when I get back to prison,\u201d
\nOkemefuna said.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nSome of the items displayed at the
\nexhibition include leather shoes and bags, NPS uniforms for staff and
\ninmates as well as farm produce like eggs and yams.
