A leak from an oilfield operated by Shell\u00a0Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) at Aghoro community in Bayelsa\u00a0discharged some 1,114 barrels of crude oil into the environment.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

The leakage of 1,114 barrels of SPDC\u2019s\u00a0Bonny light crude stream had adversely impacted the fishing vocation of\u00a0residents who had withdrawn from fishing to pave way for clean up<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
The resulting oil spill impacted and\u00a0polluted an estimated area of 113.03 hectares, according to a joint\u00a0Investigation Visit (JIV) report released in Yenagoa.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
It would be recalled that a disagreement\u00a0in the areas impacted by the leak had stalled the release of the Joint\u00a0Investigation Visit (JIV) report of the oil spill.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
Community leaders, who participated in the JIV to determine the cause of the spill reportedly refused to sign the report.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
The refusal was attributed to wide
\ndisparity between the impacted areas claimed by Shell and the community,
\nbut Mr Bamidele Odugbesan, Media Relations Manager at SPDC said that
\nthe grey areas had been sorted out.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
The report indicated that only 247.5 out
\nof the 1,114 of SPDC\u2019s crude blend has been recovered at the spill site,
\nwhile the remaining is yet to be accounted for.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
According to the spill incident report,
\nthe oil leak was reported on May 17 but the joint visit could not be
\nimmediately conducted until June 23.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
The report said the spill was caused by
\nequipment failure resulting from weak integrity on the 24 inch Trans
\nRamos Pipeline giving rise to cracks on the pipeline at Aghoro, Ekeremor
\nLocal Government Area of Bayelsa.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
Representatives of the host community,
\nNational Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Bayelsa
\nMinistry of Environment and SPDC who conducted the investigation agreed
\non the findings and signed the report.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
Repair work on the leaking pipeline was underway while recovery of spilled oil from the site is still ongoing.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n
<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/div>\n
Reacting on the development, Odugbesan
\nregretted incessant spills on the Trans Ramos Pipeline, saying that
\nalthough the May 17 spill was traced to equipment failure, other leaks
\nwere predominantly caused by sabotage.<\/u><\/u><\/div>\n

\nPipeline is very worrisome, for instance between April and May, 26 spill
\nincidents were reported on that line and out of these, 18 of them were
