Disruption in supply chains now new normal since 2020- Logistics Expert

Mr Alfred Okugbeni, the Convener of Haulage and Logistics Magazine Annual Conference and Exhibition (HAULMACE), says disruption of supply chains has become the new normal since the year 2020.

The supply chain disruption occurs when there is an interruption in the flow of process that involves any of the components associated with the production, sales, and distribution of specific goods or services.

An organised supply chain is important  in maintaining the quality of products from start to end, and ensuring that all resources deployed are of the best quality.

Okugbeni made the assertion on Tuesday  in Lagos during the HAULMACE 2022.

The theme of the event was: “Developing an Adaptive Framework in the Nigerian Haulage and Logistics Industry:an Imperative for Stability in a Vuca Environment”.

According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic affected global supply chains causing worldwide slowness, shortages and affecting consumer patterns.

The convener said that both countries and businesses alike should find an adaptive framework for managing the issues in order to minimise the effect of these continuous disruptions.

He said that this was the reason HAULMACE 2022 was taking place.

He said that business environment today could be described as highly unstable and unpredictable, where disruptions had become the new normal.

“This environment is also described as ‘VUCA’ (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity’.

“VUCA is an acronym that was used for the first time in 1987 by the United States Army War College after the cold war.

“It is a concept that is gaining new relevance to characterise the current environment which we find ourselves in,” he said.

The highlight of the event included the inauguration of an Advisory  Council and the presentation of awards to participants.
