Stimulate interest of youths in insurance, commissioner urges practitioners

The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, has urged insurance practitioners to be more proactive in stimulating the interest of Nigerian youths in insurance.

Adefisayo made the appeal during a visit of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) led by Deputy President, Mr Babatunde Oguntade, said a statement by the council’s spokesman, Mr Oladele Adeleso, on Thursday in Lagos.

Adefisayo said players in the industry needed to rethink and re-engineer ways of making insurance a favourable option for the youth.

The commissioner decried the poor acceptance of insurance in the society despite the huge potential of the profession.

Adefisayo advised the brokers and other operators in the industry to key into the comprehensive school project of the Lagos state government.

She said this was designed to provide hands-on training for students of the peculiar schools towards making them self-reliant as against obsession for certificate.

In his address, NCRIB’s deputy president, Oguntade said the council’s engagement with the state government, through the commissioner, was geared towards promoting insurance among secondary school students in the state.

He lamented the low acceptance of insurance as a subject in the curriculum of secondary schools and noted that the council needed the support of the state’s Ministry of Education to change the narrative.

Oguntade, who is also Chairman of the council’s Research and Development Committee, stated that the profession accommodated diverse people from varied educational backgrounds.

He commended the Lagos state government for its enthusiasm to support the move by the council to synergise efforts in designing a robust curriculum for insurance education that would stimulate the interest of secondary school students.
