AFAN advocates policies to protect farmers

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has called on governments at all levels to come up with policies to secure farmers while carrying out their farm activities.

The AFAN chairman in the state, Mr Romanus Eze made the call on Thursday Enugu it had become necessary following the insecure, volatile and uncertain environment farmers were faced with in parts of the country.

He said that such situation was affecting the quest for the Federal Government to achieve the much touted food sufficiency and security.

He also said that the prevailing circumstance were insecurity had become a major threat to farmers had negatively impacted on government’s agricultural policies aimed at diversifying the economy.

Eze also said that governments at all levels needed to make deliberate efforts at training and retraining of farmers with a view to improving yields.

He applauded the Federal Government for always rolling out policies that were beneficial to farmers but added that such policies would be more effective if farmers were part of their formulation.

“Agricultural policies in Nigeria are always good but a good policy that does not provide for the training of the end users will worth nothing,” he said.

On the availability of farm inputs in the area, the AFAN chairman said that it was sad that such inputs were made available almost at the end of the farm season.

“Any farm input that gets to the farmers outside the farm season is worth noting,” he said.

Eze said that good policies needed proper and coordinated execution to yield a good result.
