Stakeholders of tax related issues in Kano have united under the Tax Justice and Governance Platform, to build a census amongst them, to accelerate tax relief and ensure governance reforms.
At a two-day Kano State Tax summit, the stakeholders United to bridge communication gaps and synergize to ensure harmony in tax collection and utilization in Kano.
The Coordinator of the platform, Dr Mustapha Yahya while speaking at the summit, explained that the aim was to synergize, discuss and find a way forward on issues around taxation.
He explained that the union comprised of interest groups that mobilised to promote fair, just, equitable s progressive tax regime in Nigeria.
Also, Dr Saied Tafida, explained that the aim of the group was to provide a room for understanding and bridging the gaps around tax issues involving several bodies.
He said that at the summit, was expected to change the narrative and provide indepth guide to the issues on tax especially at state’s level.
Representative of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Mr Sani Hussaini, called for constant dialogue between stakeholders.
He also said that the association demand that government checks the trend of resources before fixing its tax, especially when considering the detereorating global economy.
MAN also solicited for the review of interest rates by the government, this exploring ways to assist tax payers diversify economy and promoting finance access to them.
Speaking on behalf of the Kano state Internal Revenue Service, Mr Muhammad Aminu, explained that there was need for people to know the of dues collected from them.
He said, “Peole should know that not all dues collected from them are tax, because there are government agencies that collect dues from defaulters and are not form of tax.”
The Tax Justice and Governance Platform (a non government association), organised a two- day Kano Tax summit on Tuesday and Wednesday in Kano.
