Massive South African diamond for auction in July

PANA

An enormous 39 carat rare blue diamond, discovered at Pretoria’s Cullinan Diamond Mine in April, could be sold for US$35 million when it goes on auction in July.

A similar rough gem – the 29-carat Blue Moon of Josephine – sold for US $25.6 million in 2014.

Petra Diamonds which purchased the mine from De Beers in 2007, has described the stone as “exceptional quality in terms of both its colour and clarity”.

The diamond will be displayed in Antwerp, Dubai, Hong Kong, and New York later this month and prospective buyers will have until 12 July to bid.

The Cullinan Mine, situated in the Magaliesberg mountain range, has produced the world’s most famous diamond finds, including the Cullinan Diamond which was presented to Edward VII in 1907 and the Great Star of Africa which is the largest clear cut diamond in the world.
