Two new state-of-the-art Mobile Harbor Cranes (MHCs), costing $80 million acquired by leading global terminal operator, APM Terminals, have been commissioned.
The cranes which were acquired to boost service delivery at the Apapa Port, Lagos, were inaugurated on April 23, 2020 by the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman.
The acquisition of the cranes for the year 2020-2021, brings the total investment of APM in Apapa since 2006 to $438 million, the highest by any private terminal operator.
APM Terminals is the biggest container terminal in West Africa and the best-equipped port terminal in Nigeria.
Bala-Usman said the ports were concessioned by the Federal Government to improve port efficiency and free government resources for other developmental purposes.
She said cargo volumes at the port have witnessed a steady rise due to favourable government policies.
NPA has continued to engage with private terminal operators at the port to rise up to the challenge of the increased cargo traffic, she said.
