eSwatini joins race for secretariat of AfCFTA

eSwatini has called on Southern African envoys to lobby other regions on its behalf to host the offices of the enlarged African market.

The country made the call in a a letter addressed to ambassadors of Southern African Development Commission (SADC).

“You are hereby requested to support and vigorously campaign for the Kingdom of eSwatini as the SADC candidate for hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat,” the letter read.

The campaign of eSwatini is coming on the heels of the Extra-Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly on the AfCFTA scheduled for 7 July 2019.

The AU meeting is, among other things, expected to decide on the country that would host the AfCFTA Secretariat.

Besides eSwatini, other countries vying for the right to host the secretariat are Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana and Kenya.
